SUMMER COMMUNICATION

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Please call 838-6900 ext 5601 if you have any questions during the summer but kindly remember that ALL BUILDINGS ARE OFF-LIMITS this summer due to multiple construction projects taking place. JVF is getting an elevator installed along with a new roof on the upper level of the school (JVF has 12 levels of roofing) as well as a new roof in the areas that were not replaced during the most recent roofing project.

KEEP READING DURING THE SUMMER!

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

I would like to remind parents how important it is for children and adults to keep reading throughout the summer. Youngsters who are able to read should be reading every day for a minimum of 20 minutes. Parents should routinely arrange to set aside at least 20 minutes each day to join their children in reading or to read to children who are non-readers. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of this simple activity and how it will help enable and empower your child to become more successful in school as well as help them become lifelong readers with an appreciation and love for reading and learning.

As an incentive to encourage reading, the JVF PTSO has arranged for students to earn a $5.00 gift certificate to the JVF Fall Book Fair by completing the 2010 JVF Summer Reading Log to document that they read at least 20 minutes a day for a minimum of 63 out of 73 days (21 total hours of reading). As an added bonus, the 2010 Barnes & Noble “Passport to Summer Reading with The 39 Clues” Reading Journal is also part of the JVF Summer Reading Packet. Any student who reads at least eight books will earn a FREE BOOK that they can choose from the list of Barnes & Noble books included in the packet. If that isn’t enough reason to keep reading, how about some FREE food. Even MacDonald’s has a summer reading program called “Check It Out” and you’ll get a FREE Happy Meal if you read five books, complete the form sent home with the Summer Reading Packet, and return the completed form to any Macdonald’s store.

It is well documented that children who read consistently over the summer are much better prepared to return to school in September and retain much more of what they learned during the previous school year. Please demonstrate by example and show your support by reading to and with your child during the summer months. Have a happy, healthy, and safe summer and please note that Tuesday, September 7th is the first day of school.
