Dear School Community,

It is hard to imagine that the summer is almost over! This is an exciting time of the school year, when teachers and administrators are preparing for the return of their students, and students and parents are anxiously waiting for the new school year to begin.

It has been a busy summer. Our capital project for building renovations impacted each school, and much work was completed. Teachers and administrators attended workshops for improving literacy skills of our students through the Columbia Teachers Reading and Writing Project, and workshops that focused on data analysis as an important mechanism for improving instructional strategies and student success.

Our commitment to our students and the community continues to be one of collaboration and partnership with all stakeholders to improve student outcomes and support student success. We have wonderful students, families and staff members here in Beacon, and look forward to a great school year!

Dr. Fern Aefsky, Superintendent of Schools

Beacon City School District is looking at improving safety of the children and adults during drop off and pick times at Sargent School. In response to all your concerns we are making some major changes for the opening of school and ask for your cooperation in making the changes work.

First, we are switching the Bus loop and student drop off areas. The student drop off and pick up area will be in the rear of Sargent School using the access road off of 9D (Wolcott Avenue). Parents can drive around the loop using the inner lane to drop off or pick up. If a parent chooses to park, they will use the loop outer lane and proceed “slowly” to the newly reconstructed parking lot, which will have 50 dedicated spots for parents. The buses will travel up Sargent Avenue and use the reconstructed upper level loop. For the residents on Sargent please note there are less bus runs than a few years back (no mid day runs) and we are taking measures to keep traffic to a minimum by making these changes.

Parents will not have access to the parking lot area off Sargent Avenue. There will be NO drop off point for students on the upper level for safety issues. This area will be for Buses and Staff parking only.

For walkers they should use either the sidewalks along the lower access road or the newly constructed pedestrian walkway connecting Sargent Avenue (across from Sycamore Drive) to Sargent School, thus avoiding walking through the Administration Building parking lot. Your cooperation in making these changes successful is requested.
